Harnett County is located on I-95, midway between New York and Florida. The county's southeastern border is seven miles from the crossroads of Interstate 95 and Interstate 40, connecting the eastern seaboard's north and south with east and west. Harnett County is served in the west by NC 87, a major thoroughfare connecting Fayetteville/Fort Bragg to the Piedmont Triad region of NC.
As of the 2020 census, the population was 133,568, its county seat is Lillington, and its largest city is Dunn. Harnett County is part of the Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
A new hospital and the ongoing expansion of a campus devoted to science and technology are just two of the latest developments in Harnett County's growing health care and social assistance sector. Brightwater Science & Technology Campus, a mixed-use medical, retail, and business park in Lillington, welcomed the new Central Harnett Hospital in 2013, joining the long-standing Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn as part of the Harnett Health System. Both hospitals are managed and operated by the Cape Fear Valley Health System, extending available health science resources even further.
Harnett County Schools is a PK-12 graded school district with 29 schools serving 20,600 students. It is also the home of Campbell University.
Harnett County features theater, musical performances, art, and cultural events. The rich history of the area is preserved in several historical sites and scenic trails. Each year, locals and visitors gather to celebrate the area's history and legacy at festivals and events.
Raleigh Durham International Airport is less than forty-five minutes away, and the Fayetteville Regional Airport is less than 30 minutes away. Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation serve the county with rail.
