Chatham at a glance

Chatham County encompasses an area of more than 707 square miles and is known as the "The Heart of North Carolina." Located between two metro areas - the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad, it's one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina. The county has four incorporated towns: Siler City, Pittsboro (county seat), Goldston and Cary, which has a small area in the eastern part of the county.

Chatham County is a short 30 minutes to Greensboro and metropolitan Raleigh, providing access to Raleigh-Durham Airport and major universities, such as University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke University. As of the 2020 census, the population was 76,285.

The county has a robust manufacturing and agricultural presence. Existing industries include 3M, Arauco, General Shale, Triangle Brick, Mountaire Farms, and Brookwood Farms. Chatham County has two industrial megasites: the Chatham Advanced Manufacturing site in the western part of the county and Triangle Innovation Point, a 2,150-acre project on the eastern side, near U.S. 1 between Raleigh and Sanford.

Chatham County is home to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, a collective of nine access areas around the shoreline of this undeveloped, 14,000-acre reservoir. There are hundreds of acres of parks and public greenways. The American Tobacco Trail, a 22-mile rails-to-trail greenway, has 4.5 miles in northeast Chatham County and connects to systems in Durham and Wake Counties.
